Back links to your site are perhaps the most important factor to Google at the present time when choosing where to rank your site .
Google used to rank your site based on the words on the page. Before too long marketers stuffed their pages with the keywords they wanted to appear on Google for, and they got to the top of Google. This was just too easy.
These days Google is much more interested in what other people are saying your site is about. This is where backlinks come in. If you can get backlinks to your site, preferably lots of them, you will benefit through increased ranking.
However, it is not that easy.
As well as looking at the number of back links coming in Google also looks at their quality. So, you need a good number of these coming in from quality sites. This means you want some with a PR (Google ‘Page Rank’) of 3, 4 or even 5 or 6. This will take some research – but can be done.
How Many Backlinks Are Enough?
In terms of numbers, just a few won’t do.
Think about getting 50 backlinks a week for three months or so. This should get you started.
Really, it all depends on how competitive your search phrases are.
Anchor Text
Oh – and I should mention anchor text. Of those links coming into your site, get as many as possible of them with anchor text in. In other words where your key phrase is in a hyperlink which has to be clicked to come back to your site. This is how Google knows that is what your site is about. Think of the hyperlink, with your key phrase in, as a vote for your site. And ‘Votes mean Visitors’!
Links without anchor text account as well – just not as much.
Happy linking!
